Olangchung Gola Trek: Discover Nepal’s Remote Walung Himalayan Village

Olangchung Gola Trek

16 Days | Eastern Nepal | Remote Himalayan Trek | Walung Culture | Tamor Valley | Olangchung Gola

If you are searching for a Himalayan trek away from Nepal’s busiest trails, Olangchung Gola Trek takes you deep into one of eastern Nepal’s most remote and culturally fascinating mountain regions. Also known as Walungchung Gola or Walung, Olangchung Gola is a historic settlement of the Walung people in the upper Tamor Valley of Taplejung District. At approximately 3,191 metres, the village sits close to the Nepal–Tibet border and preserves a distinctive Himalayan culture, traditional architecture and Buddhist heritage.

The journey to Olangchung Gola is part of the adventure. After travelling through eastern Nepal, the trail follows the Tamor River through forests, suspension bridges, waterfalls and remote mountain settlements before reaching the historic stone-walled village.

Unlike the established trekking routes of Everest, Annapurna and Langtang, the Olangchung Gola Trek offers a much quieter experience. There are fewer trekkers, fewer modern facilities and far less commercialisation. You come here for wilderness, culture, remoteness and the experience of reaching somewhere genuinely different. At Red Reach Himalaya, we operate the Olangchung Gola Trek as a private, carefully planned journey through eastern Nepal, with an itinerary designed around the realities of this remote region.

We hope you leave Nepal with memories of the remote Tamor Valley, the Walung people and the remarkable village of Olangchung Gola. Farewell and safe journey home.

Olangchung Gola Trek Difficulty

We rate the Olangchung Gola Trek as Moderate to Challenging. The trek does not require technical mountaineering skills, but it takes place in a remote Himalayan environment. You should be prepared for:

  • approx 6 hours of trekking on several days
  • Uneven mountain trails
  • Steep ascents and descents
  • Suspension bridges
  • Remote terrain
  • Limited facilities
  • Changes in weather
  • Basic mountain accommodation
  • Long road journeys

The highest overnight point on our standard itinerary is Olangchung Gola at 3,191 metres. The itinerary also includes rest and exploration days to make the journey more comfortable.

Best Time for Olangchung Gola Trek

The best seasons are generally spring and autumn. Spring: March to May. Spring brings warmer conditions and beautiful vegetation. The forests can be particularly attractive during the rhododendron flowering season.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is one of Nepal’s best trekking seasons. The monsoon has generally cleared the atmosphere, creating good conditions for mountain views. October and November are particularly popular months for trekking.

Winter: December to February

Winter trekking may be possible, but cold temperatures and snow can affect higher sections and accommodation.

Monsoon: June to August – no good time

Eastern Nepal receives significant monsoon rainfall. Roads can become difficult and trails may be affected by rain, landslides and slippery conditions. Always check current conditions before travelling.

Olangchung Gola Trek Permits

Because Olangchung Gola is located in the restricted and conservation-area trekking region of Taplejung, the appropriate permits must be arranged before entering the route. Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Entry Fee: NPR 3,000 per person. Restricted Area Permit; US$20 per person per week for the first four weeks and US$25 per person per week thereafter.

Permit requirements and government fees can change, so Red Reach Himalaya verifies the applicable requirements before each departure. Where current regulations require a licensed guide, agency arrangement or TIMS, these are handled as part of the trekking preparation.

Olangchung Gola Trek Cost

There is no single price that is appropriate for every Olangchung Gola Trek. The final cost depends on:

  • Number of travellers
  • Travel dates
  • Domestic flights
  • Private transportation
  • Accommodation

Accommodation on the Olangchung Gola Trek

One of the things travellers should understand before booking this trek is that Olangchung Gola is a remote destination. Accommodation is much more basic than on popular routes such as Everest Base Camp and Annapurna. Depending on the location and current availability, accommodation may include:

  • Local guesthouses
  • Basic lodges
  • Homestay-style accommodation
  • Teahouses
  • Other locally available mountain accommodation

The facilities can be simple. For many travellers, this is part of the attraction. You are travelling into a remote Himalayan community—not a developed tourist resort.

Food on the Olangchung Gola Trek

Food availability is more limited than on Nepal’s established trekking routes. Meals may include:

  • Dal bhat
  • Rice
  • Vegetables
  • Noodles
  • Pasta
  • Soup
  • Eggs
  • Bread
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Local dishes

Food supplies in remote mountain areas depend on transportation and local availability. Travellers should therefore expect a simpler menu than they would find on the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna trekking routes.

The Walung People and Their Culture

The cultural experience is one of the most important reasons to trek to Olangchung Gola. The Walung people have lived for generations in the upper Tamor Valley. Their culture reflects the unique position of the region between Nepal and Tibet. Traditional architecture, Buddhist practices, local customs and village life provide an opportunity to experience a different side of Himalayan Nepal. For culturally curious travellers, Olangchung Gola is much more than a trekking destination. It is a journey into a living Himalayan community.

Deki Chholing Gompa

The Deki Chholing Gompa is one of the cultural highlights of Olangchung Gola. Located above the village, the monastery provides an important connection to the Buddhist heritage of the Walung community. Visitors should treat the monastery as a living religious site. When visiting:

  • Dress respectfully
  • Ask before taking photographs
  • Follow local instructions
  • Avoid disturbing religious ceremonies
  • Respect religious objects
  • Maintain a quiet and respectful manner

For photographers and cultural travellers, the monastery and village offer a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual heritage of eastern Nepal.

The Tamor River and Upper Tamor Valley

The Tamor River is one of the defining features of this journey. The trail follows the river through dramatic mountain scenery, with forests, waterfalls, suspension bridges and steep valley walls. The changing landscape is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the trek. At lower elevations, the vegetation is lush and forested. As you climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine. This gradual transformation makes the journey itself one of the major highlights of Olangchung Gola Trek.

Is Olangchung Gola Trek Suitable for First-Time Trekkers?

Yes, with appropriate preparation and a private itinerary, but we recommend that trekkers have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable with several hours of walking. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not necessarily essential for the standard itinerary. The bigger challenge is not technical climbing. It is the combination of remote terrain + long travel days + basic facilities + changing mountain conditions. Our guides can adjust the pace where practical according to the group’s condition and circumstances.
