Trekking and Cultural exploration
The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek offers trekkers an opportunity to witness spectacular views of snow-capped mountain peaks and traverse a diverse landscape that ranges from subtropical lowlands to rhododendron and alpine forests, culminating in magnificent glaciers. This region is protected under the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area project, funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which works to preserve endangered animals. During your trek, you may encounter a variety of wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, the Asian black bear, and the red panda. Bird enthusiasts can look forward to spotting species like the golden-breasted fulvetta, snow cock, and blood pheasant.
The trek explores the Yalung Glacier and the south side of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. The trail ascends gradually through pristine forests, crop fields, and tranquil villages, leading to the base camp at Ramche (4610m). This challenging yet rewarding trek requires a good level of fitness and previous trekking experience to fully enjoy the beauty of this remote eastern corner of Nepal.
The base camp at Ramche is accessed by following the trail through the Yalung Glacier, with stops at viewpoints for Kabru and Rathong peaks, which are part of the ridge extending south from Kanchenjunga. Kabru is notable as the southernmost 7,000m peak in the world. From Ramche, trekkers can hike to a ridge that offers stunning views of the Kanchenjunga South Face. Further ahead, you can also view the south face of Mount Janu, Nyukla Lanchung, and other awe-inspiring Himalayan peaks.
This trek is ideal for those with good fitness and previous trekking experience who desire to see the third-highest mountain in the world after Everest and K2, and have a deep interest in nature. The trek offers an inspiring journey through diverse landscapes and rich cultural experiences.
