Kanchanjunga Base Camp Trek – A 17-Day Himalayan Adventure to Nepal’s Remote Eastern Frontier
Explore the Untouched Beauty of the Kanchenjunga Region
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Nepal’s remote eastern Himalayas, leading to the south base camp of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m). This 17-day trek takes adventurers across an incredible variety of landscapes—from lush subtropical forests and terraced fields to alpine woodlands and majestic glaciers.
Protected under the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, the region is a haven for biodiversity. Funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), conservation efforts have made it possible to encounter rare species such as the snow leopard, red panda, and Asian black bear. Bird lovers can look out for exotic Himalayan birds like the golden-breasted fulvetta, blood pheasant, and snow cock.
Stunning Mountain Views: Witness breathtaking panoramas of Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Mount Janu, and the far-reaching Himalayan range.
Wildlife and Nature: Trek through one of the most pristine conservation zones in Nepal, rich in flora and fauna.
Authentic Local Culture: Connect with isolated communities, experience Sherpa hospitality, and visit peaceful Buddhist monasteries.
Challenging Trails: This high-altitude adventure is ideal for seasoned trekkers looking for off-the-beaten-path trekking in Nepal.
Glacial Wonders: Walk alongside the Yalung Glacier and stand at Ramche Base Camp (4,610m), surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
The trail begins in the fertile valleys near Bhadrapur and gradually climbs through charming villages like Khesewa, Mamangkhe, and Yamphuding. As you ascend, you’ll notice the change in vegetation and lifestyle. The route continues through Cheram and leads to the breathtaking Ramche Base Camp, located near the Yalung Glacier. Along the way, you’ll pause at dramatic viewpoints showcasing Kabru, Rathong, and the South Face of Kanchenjunga.

Mamangkhe is the heart of the Limbu cultural region. There is a museum and cultural center in Mamangkhe. Also the Rai and Kirat ethnics groups live in Mamangkhe. Some people just trek up to Mamangkhe and then return.

A little tough with frequent accents and descents. Yamphuding is the biggest village on the south side of Kanchenjunga.
A low hill trek, passing through unspoiled local villages and terrace fields. This is a rarely used trail. Locals do not have a lot of contact with trekkers and are very friendly and curious. Homestay is available in Khebang. Very worth visiting.
