The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is an incredible journey that combines the renowned Ghorepani Poon Hill trek with the majestic Annapurna Base Camp trek. This trek offers a unique blend of low-altitude mountain views and high Himalayan glacier landscapes, perfect for trekkers who want to experience diverse cultures and the rural lifestyle of Nepalese communities.
The adventure begins in the beautiful, touristic city of Pokhara, following a scenic drive from Kathmandu. The trek passes through charming rural villages such as Nayapul, Birethanti, Hile, Thikhedhunga, Ulleri, and Banthanti, eventually reaching Ghorepani. Ghorepani, a paradise in itself, offers panoramic views from west to east, featuring the unique culture of the Pun Magar community. Spring and autumn are the best times for this trek, providing crystal-clear mountain views and vibrant rhododendron blossoms. The sunrise and sunset views from Poon Hill (3,210m) are spectacular, with the Himalayas bathed in golden light.
The trail continues through forests inhabited by deer, wild goats, and other wildlife, leading trekkers to various tea houses at Tadapani, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Bamboo, Dobhan, Himalaya, Deurali, and Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m), culminating at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). Walking along the Modi Khola river after Chhomrong, the trail passes through a narrow gorge between the towering peaks of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Hiunchuli. This sacred area, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, is revered and no animal sacrifices are permitted here. The views of glaciers, icefalls, and majestic mountain peaks during sunset and sunrise make this trek unforgettable.
On the return journey, the trail retraces back to Chhomrong and then descends to Jhinu Danda, where trekkers can enjoy a natural hot spring. The trek continues through the Gurung community-dominated villages, offering cultural insights and hospitality. The final stretch involves walking to Siwa (1,230m) village and driving back to Pokhara, concluding the adventure with a flight back to Kathmandu.

The first day trek starts at Nayapul after 1 and half hours driving by private vehicle from Pokhara. After 20 minutes we begin with a short walk along the banks of the Modi Khola. Then we reach Birethanti (1,015m) a large village that has many shops and teahouses. The main inhabitants of this village are Gurung, Magar and Thakali. Then, the trail continues following the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola through villages and climbs steadily up the side of the valley to Hille (1,495m). After the short climb, we reach Tikhedhunga (1570m) and further one hour upto Ulleri. Today’s walk offers a short and comparatively easy day, during the journey allowing us to get the full experience of trekking in Nepal. Stay overnight at a tea house.
After breakfast, we begin our journey with a steep climb to the large Magar village at Ulleri (2,070m). Then the trail continues to ascend more gently, through dense forests of oak and rhododendrons towards Banthanti (2250m). Occasionally, we can see Lonmgur (long tail black mouth Monkey) jumping in the trees. Then we trek towards Nangethanti (2,460m), after an hour walk we arrive at Ghorepani (2840m). Stay overnight at a lodge.
We will hike about 45 minutes up to Poon Hill (3210m) early in the morning. This viewpoint provides an unobstructed and beautiful view of the sunrise over the high Himalayas with panoramic view giants Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna (8,091m), Machhapuchere, Nilgiri, Hiuchuli, South Annapurna etc. Additionally we can see a network of other peaks, slowly beginning to appear like magic before our eyes. We come back to Ghorepani for a hot breakfast and start walking to Tadapani. Here the trail climbs alongside ridges with pine and rhododendron forests to the Deurali and then descends through beautiful waterfalls, streams, and dense forest to Banthati. The streams have some clear pools alongside the trail which finally climbs up to the final destination Tadapani meaning ‘hot water.’ This is the water supply for a village far away.
After breakfast the trail starts with a steep downhill through rhododendron forests and terrace fields to Kimrong Khola, offering good views of the upper Modi valley. Then, after crossing the suspension bridge, ascend to a Gurung village. You can donate some money for the school kids and school welfare if you feel so inclined. From here the trail goes on, gradually ascending through the forests with a huge landslide ridge - an easy walk to Chommrong (2140 m). Here we have some views of the mighty peak of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Gangapurna and Fishtail touch to the skyline. Stay overnight at a lodge.
The trail descends down a stone staircase to the Chhomrong Khola and we continue climbing to a small village named Sinuwa (2340m). The trail leads us through the dense forest further on. Then the route travels very steeply down a rock bank through thick bamboo at the bottom of the gorge to Bamboo. And after lunch we go up along the Modi Khola forest to the Dovan. Stay overnight at a guesthouse.
Today is a short day trek to altitude and risk of snow avalanches in the area that we need to cross in the next morning. All the way we will climb through serene bamboo and rhododendron mixed forests nearby the Himalayan Hotel. This area, known as Hinko cave, was used for porter’s shelter in previous times. We then continued to Deurali. On the ridge above Hinko is the stretch of trail that is subject to avalanches. Stay overnight at a guesthouse.
After breakfast the trail takes us into the heart of the Sanctuary at the Annapurna Base Camp for our overnight stay. The trail goes uphill for a few hours passing some roofless shepherds' huts along the side of a moraine - this area is windy and often snowbound. The trail climbs past the Machhapuchre Base Camp (3,700m), which isn’t really a base camp since climbing the mountain is not permitted. From here to Annapurna Base Camp, we’ll walk upon 2 hours of trail offering superb Himalaya scenery with amazing panoramic views of snow capped mountains surrounding you. The rest of the day you have time to explore around and relax at the base camp as per your interest.
After breakfast we drop down to Bamboo, collecting boundless experiences. This morning we glimpsed the sunrise and the last evening sunset over Mt. Annapurna I, Annapurna Fangs. The unobstructed views of mountain scenery, which is very spectacular as it's totally surrounded by mountains. We now know why this area is known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. After having spent a great time here, we retrace the journey back to Bamboo for the overnight stay. You can rest and relax in the evening with an unforgettable view of the many snow capped peaks and enjoy dinner.
The trail follows the same route until Chomrong. Once we have passed Khuldighar there is an experimental sheep farm, the trail continues through rhododendron and bamboo forests with majestic mountain scenery, especially Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,997m). From the ancient Gurung village of Chomrong, the trail descends very steeply to the Jhinu hot springs, where you can bathe in natural hot springs, spend some time and splash yourself in the pool to cleanse your body.
