Our heartfelt condolences go to every family, friend, teammate, and rescue worker affected by this tragedy. While the circumstances of their passing are heartbreaking, this is not a story about how Nims Dai died. It is a story about how he lived.

Nirmal Purja was born in Baglung, western Nepal, into a modest family where hard work was simply part of everyday life. Like many young Nepalis, he grew up understanding that opportunities had to be earned through determination and sacrifice. Unlike what many people may assume today, his childhood dream was never to become a famous mountaineer. His dream was to become a Gurkha army – we the local call it – Laure hune, that many of my class mates made to British Army while studying at school.
For more than two centuries, the Gurkhas have been respected around the world for their courage, loyalty, and professionalism. Every year, thousands of young Nepalis compete for the chance to join the British Army, yet only a very small number are selected. It is one of the world’s most demanding military recruitment processes, requiring outstanding physical fitness, mental strength, discipline, and character.

Nirmal Purja was one of those few. His elder brother had already served as a Gurkha, inspiring him to follow the same path. Like many young men from rural Nepal, his decision was also practical. At a time when employment opportunities were limited and average incomes were low, joining the British Army offered both honour and the chance to provide a better future for his family. No one could have imagined that this young Gurkha would one day become one of the greatest mountaineers the world has ever known.

His abilities soon earned him a place in the elite Special Boat Service (SBS), one of the United Kingdom’s most respected special forces units. The years he spent as a soldier shaped the man the world would later admire. They taught him discipline, leadership, teamwork, courage under pressure, and the importance of never giving up. Success on the mountains was only one chapter of his life. He founded Elite Exped, building a company recognised for professionalism, ambitious expeditions, and strong leadership. His vision extended beyond climbing. Through ventures such as Mustang Helicopter, he believed Nepal could continue to improve rescue services, aviation, and adventure tourism while creating opportunities for future generations. He understood that tourism was more than an industry – it was a way of sharing Nepal with the world.
The Man Behind the Records – The Life of Nims Dai
Behind every summit was a husband, a son, a brother, a friend, and a proud Nepali. Those who knew him often spoke not only of his determination but also of his generosity, humour, confidence, and willingness to help others succeed. His greatest achievement was never simply the number of mountains he climbed. It was the number of people he inspired.
A Legacy That Will Never Fade
Records are made to be broken. Legends are remembered forever. Nims Dai showed the world what courage, discipline, and belief could achieve. More importantly, he showed millions of people – especially young Nepalis, that where you begin in life does not determine how far you can go. His life reminds us that greatness is not born on the summit. It is built through years of sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering refusal to accept limits. The mountains will continue to stand for centuries. Future climbers will follow the routes he climbed and attempt to surpass the records he set. But the path he opened – for Nepali climbers, for the Gurkha spirit, and for every person who dares to dream beyond the possible -will remain his greatest achievement. Rest in peace, Nims Dai.
