Kathmandu, the vibrant capital city of Nepal, beautifully balances ancient traditions and modern technology. Encircled by a stunning chain of mountains from Nagarkot in the east to Kakani in the west, Kathmandu offers easily accessible and quick approaches to the mountains. The Himalayan views from Mt. Everest in the east to Manaslu and Hiumchuli in the west are breathtaking throughout these trails. Langtang and Ganesh Himal dominate the northern skyline, and on a clear day, you can even glimpse part of the Annapurna range. The villages dotted along the ridges and foothills offer a bird’s-eye view of diverse cultures. The oak, pine, and rhododendron forests showcase Nepal’s rapidly disappearing forest resources.

Nagarjuna, also known as Jamacho, is the nearest day hiking peak from Kathmandu, located northwest of Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of 2,128 meters. The hike starts from Rani Ban (Queen’s forest), a 20-minute drive from Thamel. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach the summit. Nagarjuna Hill is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site with a shrine of Padmashambhava and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas and Kathmandu Valley.
This hike starts at Gundu village, 2 kilometers from Suryabinayak and about 10 km from Kathmandu. The trail climbs up, offering views of lush green fields and blue skies. Key attractions include the Pilot Baba Ashram and Somnath Temple, Ghyampe Danda, and Ashaphuri Mahadev Temple. The hike is about 18 km and graded as easy.
Shivapuri, at 2,732 meters, is the second-highest hill around Kathmandu Valley. Starting from Budhanilkantha, the trail ascends through the Shivapuri forest. The hike offers impressive views from the summit and takes about 5-6 hours round trip.
Begin your hike from the ancient Changunarayan Temple, built in 323 AD, and trek through several villages to Nagarkot, offering beautiful sunrise and sunset views over the Himalayas. Continue the trek to Sundarijal and then drive back to Kathmandu.
Champadevi, at 2,278 meters, offers a trail through tall pine forests and a ridge providing a wide-angle view of Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas. Key points of interest include a Buddhist stupa and a Hindu temple.
Starting from Dhulikhel, this hike ascends to Namo Buddha, an important Buddhist site, and descends to Panauti, a historic Newari town. The hike offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural exploration.
Phulchauki, the highest point in Kathmandu Valley at 2,759 meters, starts from Godavari Botanical Garden. The trail offers views of rhododendron forests and orchids, and birdwatching opportunities. The summit provides panoramic Himalayan views.
Starting from the ancient Changunarayan Temple, this hike passes through several villages and winds up to Nagarkot, known for its stunning Himalayan views.
Starting from the historic Newari village of Panauti, this hike ascends through beautiful villages and lands to the peaceful Namobuddha hilltop, offering serene monastery surroundings and stunning views.
