Our Great Himalayan Trail

Our Great Himalayan Trail: Across the Himalayas of Nepal

The Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) is one of Nepal’s most ambitious trekking journeys, linking a network of existing trails across the country’s Himalayan region.

Rather than being one continuous path, the GHT brings together different trekking routes, remote mountain trails and high passes, stretching from east to west across Nepal. The complete journey is a serious undertaking, but you do not have to walk it all. Many trekkers choose individual sections that suit their time, interests and experience.

A Trek Through Many Faces of Nepal

One of the most rewarding things about the Great Himalayan Trail is the variety of landscapes and communities along the way.

The routes pass through terraced hillsides, traditional villages, forests, alpine meadows and high mountain valleys. As you travel from one region to another, the scenery, culture and way of life change with the landscape.

You may spend one day walking through a quiet mountain village and the next crossing a high Himalayan pass surrounded by snow and rock. Along the way, there are opportunities to meet people from different communities and experience the traditions and hospitality that make trekking in Nepal so special.

High Passes and Great Himalayan Views

The GHT includes some of Nepal’s most demanding and spectacular high-altitude terrain. Depending on the route chosen, trekkers may cross high passes such as Thorong La, while other sections take you into the remote regions around Makalu, Everest, Langtang, Manaslu and Kanchenjunga.

The mountains are, of course, a major part of the experience. But the appeal of the GHT is not simply about collecting views of famous peaks. It is the journey between them—the remote trails, changing landscapes, small settlements and sense of being far from the usual trekking routes.

A Serious Himalayan Adventure

The Great Himalayan Trail should not be underestimated. Some sections are remote and demanding, with high passes, long walking days, unpredictable mountain weather and limited facilities.

Good physical preparation, appropriate equipment and careful acclimatization are essential. Some sections also require camping and experienced high-altitude support.

For this reason, we plan GHT journeys around the individual trekker rather than treating the trail as a one-size-fits-all itinerary. We can help select a section that matches your experience, available time and appetite for adventure.

Responsible Travel in Remote Nepal

Many GHT routes pass through communities where tourism provides an important source of income. Staying in locally run lodges, using local guides and porters, and travelling responsibly can help ensure that the benefits of trekking reach the communities along the trail.

The Himalayan environment is equally important. These are fragile landscapes, and responsible trekking means respecting local communities, managing waste carefully and leaving as little impact as possible.

Why Trek the Great Himalayan Trail?

The Great Himalayan Trail is not simply one long trek. It is a way of discovering Nepal from east to west, through landscapes and communities that few travellers have the opportunity to experience.

You can choose a demanding high-altitude section, combine several regions into a longer journey, or explore a quieter part of the Himalayas away from the more established trekking routes.

If you are looking for a serious Himalayan adventure, the Great Himalayan Trail offers the chance to experience Nepal slowly, on foot, and well beyond the usual trails.

At Red Reach Himalaya, we can design a GHT journey around your experience, interests and available time—from a challenging section to a longer expedition across the Himalayas.
