Chepang village Trek

Chepang Village Trek for 4 Days | Indigenous Culture Trek in Central Nepal

About Chepang Village Trek:
The 3 nights 4 days Chepang Village Trek offers a rare and authentic cultural experience into the lives of the Chepang community—one of Nepal’s most isolated and indigenous ethnic groups. This short but enriching trek begins from Hugdi, a small village located along the Prithvi Highway between Kathmandu and Chitwan. It follows an off-the-beaten-path trail to Hattibang, Jyandala, and Gadi, taking trekkers through peaceful hilltop villages, terraced farms, and dense forests with occasional Himalayan views. The trek is ideal for those seeking to witness Nepal’s ethnic diversity, interact with warm and welcoming local families, and support community-based tourism.

About the Chepang People:
The Chepang are a semi-nomadic indigenous group living in the remote hills of central Nepal, mainly in the districts of Chitwan, Makwanpur, Dhading, and Gorkha. Traditionally dependent on hunting, fishing, and foraging, modern Chepang communities are gradually adapting to settled agriculture and small-scale animal husbandry. Their homes are built from locally available materials such as wood, bamboo, and clay, often in scattered hill settlements. Chepang marriages are arranged or love-based, and ceremonies are simple, rooted in animist traditions and nature worship. Most Chepang people practice shamanism, although Hindu and Christian influences are also present. Their income sources include maize, millet, beekeeping, handicrafts, forest herbs, and increasingly, tourism. Educational access remains limited in remote villages, but local schools supported by NGOs are slowly improving literacy. Life in a Chepang village is humble and revolves around community work, rituals, agriculture, and an intimate relationship with nature. Learn more about Chepang People.

Detailed Itinerary for Chepang Village Trek

Day 1: Drive to Hugdi (3.5–4 hours) and Trek to Hattibang (4–5 hours trek)
Begin the journey with a scenic drive from Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway to Hugdi, the trek’s starting point. After a short break, start walking uphill through terraced fields and forest trails towards Hattibang, a small village perched on a ridge. This part of the trek offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, distant peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. In Hattibang, spend the night in a community homestay or basic lodge operated by local Chepang families. Experience a traditional dinner and interaction with villagers, offering an insight into their way of life.

Day 2: Trek from Hattibang to Jyandala (5–6 hours trek)
After a local breakfast, trek towards Jyandala, passing through Chepang settlements, lush forests, and small terraced farmlands. Along the way, visit homes, observe daily chores, and learn about traditional farming techniques, forest gathering, and natural medicine. Jyandala is a culturally rich village where you can enjoy local hospitality, cultural songs or dances (on request), and a hearty meal made from organic local produce. Overnight in a local homestay or guesthouse.

Day 3: Trek from Jyandala to Gadi (5–6 hours trek)
Leave Jyandala after breakfast and walk through one of the most scenic portions of the trek. The trail offers sweeping views of the Mahabharat range, river valleys, and dense forests. Arrive at Gadi, a historical village known for its former fort that once served as a strategic military post. It also offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, including Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Annapurna ranges on clear days. In Gadi, enjoy the peaceful environment and overnight at a community-run lodge or homestay.

Day 4: Trek to Shaktikhor Roadhead (2–3 hours trek) and Drive to Chitwan Bus Park
Enjoy a final breakfast in Gadi before starting a gentle descent through forested trails towards the roadhead near Shaktikhor. From here, a vehicle will transfer you to Chitwan Bus Park, where you can either explore Chitwan National Park or catch a tourist bus back to Kathmandu.
