Introduction
Honey Hunting and the Tiji Festival in Nepal. In May 2021, as Nepal began reopening to international tourists amid stringent COVID-19 protocols, our team at Red Reach Himalaya organized a unique and unforgettable two-week adventure for 14 Israeli tourists. This journey combined the traditional practice of Honey Hunting in Landruk Village with the vibrant Tiji Festival in Lomanthang. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the trip was a resounding success, leaving our guests with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
Traveling During the Pandemic:
Traveling in 2021 was no easy feat. With the world still grappling with COVID-19, strict protocols were in place for visitors to Nepal. Tourists were required to provide proof of vaccination or undergo a seven-day quarantine. Additionally, they needed to present detailed accommodation plans for their stay. On-arrival visas, which had been halted in 2019 and 2020, were just reinstated, making this trip one of the first of its kind during the reopening phase.
Honey Hunting in Landruk Village :
Our adventure began with a two-day Honey Hunting program in the picturesque Landruk Village. This traditional practice, deeply rooted in Nepalese culture, offered our guests a rare glimpse into an age-old way of life.
Day 1: Preparation of Honey Hunting
The first day was dedicated to preparations for Honey Hunting. Our guests observed the meticulous process of laying handmade ropes and fixing ladders. These tools are essential for the Honey Hunters to reach the high cliffs where wild bees build their hives. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as everyone geared up for the main event.
Day 2: The exciting Honey Hunting day
Early the next morning, our guests gathered to witness the Honey Hunting ritual by locals. Using handmade ropes and ladders, the hunters skillfully navigated the cliffs to extract honey from the hives. This traditional method, passed down through generations, showcased the unique skills and bravery of the local hunters. By mid-afternoon, the hunt was complete, and the celebration began. The villagers performed folk dances and music, creating a festive atmosphere that everyone enjoyed.

The Honey Hunting experience was not just about observing a traditional practice but also about supporting the local community. Our exclusive arrangement ensured that the villagers benefited from the event, and the interaction between our guests and the locals fostered a sense of mutual appreciation and respect.
The Essence of the Tiji Festival in Lomanthang
Following the Honey Hunting adventure, our journey continued to the ancient walled city of Lomanthang, where we coincided our visit with the Tiji Festival. This three-day festival, celebrated in the Upper Mustang region, is one of the most vibrant and significant cultural events in Nepal.
Historical Significance
The Tiji Festival, or “The Chasing of the Demons,” has its roots in the 15th century. It commemorates the victory of Dorje Jono, a deity, over a demon that caused destruction and suffering. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and is marked by elaborate rituals, masked dances, and vibrant costumes.
The Festivities
The festival is held in the courtyard of the Royal Palace in Lomanthang, Upper Mustang. Monks from the local monastery perform intricate dances, dressed in colorful costumes and masks representing various deities and demons. These performances narrate the story of Dorje Jono and are accompanied by traditional music played on cymbals, drums, and trumpets.
Our guests were captivated by the elaborate ceremonies and the spiritual ambiance of the festival. The vibrant colors, rhythmic dances, and the palpable sense of history and culture created an unforgettable experience. The Tiji Festival not only showcases the rich heritage of the Mustang region but also brings the community together in a celebration of faith and tradition.
Challenges and Triumphs
While the journey was filled with memorable moments, it was not without its challenges. Just a day before our scheduled flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, there was a tragic crash of a Tara Air flight near Tashang village. Understandably, this incident terrified our group, and we decided to drive back to Pokhara instead of flying. Despite this setback, our guests remained in good spirits and continued to enjoy the rest of their trip.
Exploring Pokhara
Upon reaching Pokhara, our guests indulged in the serene beauty of Phewa Lake. They enjoyed a boat ride on the tranquil waters, followed by an evening Puja (prayer) and Arati (ritual) at the lakeside temple. This peaceful and spiritual experience provided a perfect contrast to the adrenaline-filled Honey Hunting and the vibrant Tiji Festival.
Departure and Reflections
After spending a night in Pokhara, our guests prepared for their journey back home. Reflecting on their two-week adventure, they expressed immense satisfaction with the experiences and the hospitality they received. The tour had been a perfect blend of cultural immersion, adventure, and relaxation.
Overcoming the Leeches Encounter
One minor inconvenience that our guests faced was the encounter with leeches during their walk to the Honey Hunting spot. While this was a significant discomfort for the Israeli tourists, it is considered a minor nuisance for Nepalese locals. Nonetheless, this small challenge did not overshadow the overall enjoyment and excitement of the trip.
The Honey Hunting program and the Tiji Festival adventure of 2021 was a testament to the resilience and adaptability of both the tourists and the organizers. Despite the pandemic-related challenges and unexpected incidents, the trip was a remarkable success, offering our guests a unique and enriching experience. As Nepal continues to welcome tourists from around the world, we at Red Reach Himalaya Trek remain committed to providing exceptional and culturally immersive adventures. Whether it’s the thrill of Honey Hunting or the spiritual essence of the Tiji Festival, we strive to create unforgettable journeys that connect our guests with the heart and soul of Nepal.
