About the trip: Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is an amazing trip, a combination of Ghorepani Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp two different treks. Trekkers who wish to see both mountain views from a lower elevation and like to wander around the high Himalayan glacier marine, icefall with diverse culture and countryside people’s livelihood, then Poon Hill and Annapurna Base camp trek through the Pun Hill will be the best destination.

Annapurna Base Camp Poon Hill Trek starts in a beautiful touristic city at Pokhara, after a scenic drive from Kathmandu. The Poon Hill Annapurna Base Camp Trek begins through the rural villages; Nayapul, Birethanti, Hile, Thikhedhunda, Ulleri,  Banthanti and get in Ghorepani. Ghorepani is a piece of paradise; from where you have a fantastic panoramic view far west to east on the north side and the people’s culture here is unique, mostly the Pun Magar community lives around here. Spring and autumn are the best time for Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill, from where the mountain scenery can be seen in crystal clear sky and spring offers colorful jungle by rhododendron blossom, the lap of the snowcapped mountains. Even the sunrise and sunset view from Poon Hill (3,210m) is much better with panoramic Himalaya ranges appearing in golden color. The view is astonishing from east to west gradually; Lamjung Himal (6,983m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), Machhapuchhre (6,997m), Gandharva Chuli (6,248m), Hunchuli (6,441m), Annapurna South ( 7,219m), Annapurna I (8091m), Baraha Shikhar/Fang (7,647m), Nilgiri South (6,889m), Thapa/Dhampus  Peak (6,012m), Tukuche Paek (6,920m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m).

Most of the trail goes through the jungle inhabited by deer, wild goat, and many more wildlife and diverse vegetation. The trail leads you to different tea houses at Tadapani, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Bambo, Dobhan, Himalaya, Deurali, Machhapuchre Base Camp (3,700m), and then final destination at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). It is unforgettable walking in the Himalaya following the bank of Modi Khola after Chhomrong, it goes through a narrow gorge between two gigantic mountains Machhapuchre/Fishtail and Hunchuli. Beyond the Himalaya Hotel, is known as a sacred area, where it is not permitted to sacrifice animals, so people call Annapurna Sanctuary it’s another name. Annapurna Base Camp Trek Via Poon Hill is a key attraction of this trip, Glacier view a few meters away, icefall, wonderful mountain view during sunset and sunrise make your journey more pleasant.

The trail retraces till Chhomrong village and it drops at Jhinudanda for a natural hot spring. The Gurung community is the main inhabitant around this area. Collecting a bunch of unforgettable experiences, you will walk to Siwa (1230m) village to drive back to Pokhara.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Early fly to Pokhara, drive to Nayapul (1010m) – 1: 45 hours and trek to Ulleri (1960 meters) - 4 hours walk

The first day trek starts at Nayapul after 1 and half hours driving by private vehicle from Pokhara. After 20 minutes we begin with a short walk along the banks of the Modi Khola. Then we reach Birethanti (1,015m) a large village that has many shops and teahouses. The main inhabitants of this village are Gurung, Magar and Thakali. Then, the trail continues following the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola through villages and climbs steadily up the side of the valley to Hille (1,495m). After the short climb, we reach Tikhedhunga (1570m) and further one hour upto Ulleri. Today’s walk offers a short and comparatively easy day, during the journey allowing us to get the full experience of trekking in Nepal. Stay overnight at a tea house.

Day 02: Trek to Ghorepani (2840m) – 5 hours walk

After breakfast, we begin our journey with a steep climb to the large Magar village at Ulleri (2,070m). Then the trail continues to ascend more gently, through dense forests of oak and rhododendrons towards Banthanti (2250m). Occasionally, we can see Lonmgur (long tail black mouth Monkey) jumping in the trees. Then we trek towards Nangethanti (2,460m), after an hour walk we arrive at Ghorepani (2840m). Stay overnight at a lodge.

Day 03: Hike up Ghorepani to Poon Hill (3210m) - 45 minutes, after breakfast trek to Tadapani (2520m) – 5 hours walk

We will hike about 45 minutes up to Poon Hill (3210m) early in the morning. This viewpoint provides an unobstructed and beautiful view of the sunrise over the high Himalayas with panoramic view giants Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna (8,091m), Machhapuchere, Nilgiri, Hiuchuli, South Annapurna etc. Additionally we can see a network of other peaks, slowly beginning to appear like magic before our eyes. We come back to Ghorepani for a hot breakfast and start walking to Tadapani. Here the trail climbs alongside ridges with pine and rhododendron forests to the Deurali and then descends through beautiful waterfalls, streams, and dense forest to Banthati. The streams have some clear pools alongside the trail which finally climbs up to the final destination Tadapani meaning ‘hot water.’ This is the water supply for a village far away.

Day 04: Trek Tadapani to Chomrong (2140m) - 5 hours walk

After breakfast the trail starts with a steep downhill through rhododendron forests and terrace fields to Kimrong Khola, offering good views of the upper Modi valley. Then, after crossing the suspension bridge, ascend to a Gurung village. You can donate some money for the school kids and school welfare if you feel so inclined. From here the trail goes on, gradually ascending through the forests with a huge landslide ridge - an easy walk to Chommrong (2140 m). Here we have some views of the mighty peak of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Gangapurna and Fishtail touch to the skyline. Stay overnight at a lodge.

Day 05: Trek Chommrong to Dovan (2500m) - 6 hours walk

The trail descends down a stone staircase to the Chhomrong Khola and we continue climbing to a small village named Sinuwa (2340m). The trail leads us through the dense forest further on. Then the route travels very steeply down a rock bank through thick bamboo at the bottom of the gorge to Bamboo. And after lunch we go up along the Modi Khola forest to the Dovan. Stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 06: Trek Dovan to Deurali (3200m) - 5 hours walk

Today is a short day trek to altitude and risk of snow avalanches in the area that we need to cross in the next morning. All the way we will climb through serene bamboo and rhododendron mixed forests nearby the Himalayan Hotel. This area, known as Hinko cave, was used for porter’s shelter in previous times. We then continued to Deurali. On the ridge above Hinko is the stretch of trail that is subject to avalanches. Stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 07: Trek Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) - 4 to 5 hours, via Machhapuchre Base Camp (3700m)

After breakfast the trail takes us into the heart of the Sanctuary at the Annapurna Base Camp for our overnight stay. The trail goes uphill for a few hours passing some roofless shepherds' huts along the side of a moraine - this area is windy and often snowbound. The trail climbs past the Machhapuchre Base Camp (3,700m), which isn’t really a base camp since climbing the mountain is not permitted. From here to Annapurna Base Camp, we’ll walk upon 2 hours of trail offering superb Himalaya scenery with amazing panoramic views of snow capped mountains surrounding you. The rest of the day you have time to explore around and relax at the base camp as per your interest.

Day 08: Trek back Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo (2345m) - 6 hours walk

After breakfast we drop down to Bamboo, collecting boundless experiences. This morning we glimpsed the sunrise and the last evening sunset over Mt. Annapurna I, Annapurna Fangs. The unobstructed views of mountain scenery, which is very spectacular as it's totally surrounded by mountains. We now know why this area is known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. After having spent a great time here, we retrace the journey back to Bamboo for the overnight stay. You can rest and relax in the evening with an unforgettable view of the many snow capped peaks and enjoy dinner.

Day 09: Trek Bamboo to Jhinu Danda (hot spring) (1780m) - overnight at Ghandruk village - 6 hours walk

The trail follows the same route until Chomrong. Once we have passed Khuldighar there is an experimental sheep farm, the trail continues through rhododendron and bamboo forests with majestic mountain scenery, especially Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,997m). From the ancient Gurung village of Chomrong, the trail descends very steeply to the Jhinu hot springs, where you can bathe in natural hot springs, spend some time and splash yourself in the pool to cleanse your body. Walk to Ghandruk village for overnight. The rest of the day you enjoy yourself and stay overnight.

Day 10: Explore Ghandruk village and walk down to Kiliu (2 hours), drive to Pokhara airport 1 hours, fly to Kathmandu

After breakfast start trekking towards the lovely village Ghandruk which is the most visited trekking area in Nepal. Ghandruk village, the second Gurung village of Nepal is promoting rural tourism with the local resources. The major attractions of Ghandruk village are the friendly Gurung community and the people. Besides this, the unspoiled culture, rural lifestyle, local foods, guest reception and the mesmerizing view of glittering Himalayas will capture your heart. Leave Ghandruk village leisurely for 2 hours up to Kiliu where our vehicle comes to pick us up and drive for 1 hour to Pokhara airport to catch the flight to Kathamndu. You leave behind all the memories and this pristine village Ghadruk that offers breathtaking views of Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Annapurna III, Machhapuchhare and Hiunchuli,it is one of the lovely and large Gurung villages in the region. End of trek.
